How to ACTA Catholic without being one

by Dr Pravin Thevathasan

A very strange group which goes by the name of
ACTA (A Call To Action) appears to be gaining some degree of attention inside our churches. It seems to attract those people who have never really got over the sitar music and tie-dye shirts from the sixties. They believe in a brand new church called the church of Vatican Two. Of course, they don't want to know what the documents of Vatican Two actually said. What they want is josticks, chakras and the spirit of Vatican Two.

How do I know they are strange? All you have to do is Google the name of an ACTA speaker along with the word "homosexuality" or "gay marriage". For example, my church news bulletin this week says that Fr Daniel O'Leary is going to be the main speaker at an ACTA conference. A quick Google search shows that he has been a speaker for the dissident "gay Catholic" group QUEST. He also uses a lot of new age jargon. The conference is entitled "An Astonishing Secret". One wonders if the astonishing secret is on how to be a Catholic without being one. The bulletin also advises us to take a look at the ACTA website. There we read that the "internationally famous theologian" Werner Jeanrond will be speaking at an ACTA conference. I go into my Google act and voila! I discover that he has said that there should be "a broadening of the concept of marriage beyond the traditionally heterosexual framework".

It is so easy to spot a heretic these days.

I have to admit that my Google act does not always work. For instance, when I tried Googling "ACTA", I was led to "Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA)" which aims to establish an international legal framework for targeting counterfeit goods. But then again...

Fr Hugh Thwaites used to repeatedly tell me that I could spend a lifetime on solid Catholic resources and still only scratch the surface. Why waste time on counterfeit Catholicism?
